News: Guillermo Del Toro Talks ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘At The Mountains of Madness’ | Latino Review

Well, what happened?
On Monday, there were utter confusion on the state of the Unversal Pictures’ “At The Mountains of Madness” project and director Guillermo Del Toro jumped on board to helm Legendary Pictures’ “Pacific Rim” instead.
To get the real story, it should come from Del Toro himself.
First, his personal press release officially confirmed taking the job for “Pacific Rim.”
“We started developing PAC RIM a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons. We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make,” said Del Toro in a press release. “We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me.”
In an extensive interview with Deadline, del Toro went into details regarding his new job on “Pacific Rim” and what actually happened with “At The Mountains of Madness.”
He discussed the reports earlier this week about $150 million budget, R-rating for the film and possibly actor Tom Cruise attached to the project.
“Definitely, closing Tom’s deal was in their hands. He was without a doubt, absolutely in favor of being in the movie. We met extensively, both in Canada and the U.S., dozens of times,” said del Toro. “Final polishes of the screenplay met with his approval. Closing the deal is not something that was in my hands. They needed to close it corporately.”
He was confident on a $150 million R-rated movie budget that this project would gross $500 million easily.
“As far as the movie grossing that much, obviously I’m not impartial, but I have to believe that with 3D, Tom Cruise, Jim Cameron, the scope of Lovecraft’s novel that is one of the best regarded and most widely known works, I would venture that it could absolutely have been done,” he said to Deadline. “I think the ‘R’ should be worn like a badge of merit in promoting the movie. To say, this is not a gory movie, not a movie full of profanity or violence, but it’s really intense movie.”
Del Toro believed a PG-13 rating would not be appropriate for the H.P. Lovecraft story, but not a deal breaker.
“The only thing I know about Mountain is, I do not want it to be bloody, I do not want it to be crass, but I want it to be intense as possible,” he said. “Ultimately, I think the MPAA could rule the movie PG-13 because the movie and the book are not gory. If that is the outcome, fine. But I don’t want to put the PG-13 on paper.”
As for “Pacific Rim,” he clarified the ‘Godzilla’ statements for this project, but still mum on details.
“People got it confused with the ‘Godzilla’ movie a few months ago but we cleared that up,” he said “I can say the scope and imagination that have been outlined in it are absolutely appealing to me. I cannot say more, it’s not the time.”
However, del Toro believed “At the Mountains of Madness” may be revisited in the future.
“I’ve have learned in the last few years that God laughs as we make plans,” he said.
So del Toro is very anxious to get behind the camera once more.
